From our rec league players to our Olympic competitors, Abbotsford athletes are regularly making us proud and bringing us together in celebration of their accomplishments and our community spirit.
This summer, some of our junior baseball and softball clubs had particularly exceptional seasons that culminated in national championships. The Abbotsford Outlaws 2009A softball team – the first Abbotsford team in 25 years to win the provincial U15A softball title – made history as the first Abbotsford Minor Fastball Association team to claim a national title. Meanwhile, the Abbotsford Angels 13U AAA baseball team won the Baseball Canada 13U National Championship, capping off a year that saw Abbotsford Minor Baseball claim provincial titles at the 13U A, AA and AAA levels, as well as a Western championship.
Congratulations to all the players and coaches! It’s inspiring to see athletes go from a field in Abbotsford to a podium on the national stage.
As a Council we value recreation and support facilities, amenities and activities that bring us together. We’re continuing to support this through the signing of a new joint-use agreement with the Abbotsford School District for the operations and maintenance of the four synthetic turf fields on the School District’s property, and by working on advancing park amenities and developing an Arena Strategy and an Aquatics and Infrastructure Strategy.
These facilities don’t only benefit our community, they also allow local sports organizations to host large events that attract athletes and spectators from around BC and across Canada. For example, this year the BC Short Track Speed Skating Championships were held right here at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre.
We know our community is just as passionate about our fields and facilities as we are. So far this year 120 user groups spent nearly 90,000 hours on our sports fields and ball diamonds. These sports include baseball, football, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, cricket and track and field events.
With so many recreation options available, we encourage residents to make use of our sports amenities. You might start off as a beginner, but you might end up as a champion.
