All of us on Abbotsford City Council were deeply concerned to learn of the environmental spill impacting Stoney Creek in Bateman Park on July 3, 2024. Stoney Creek is a beloved park in our community where residents and visitors come to walk their dogs and enjoy the beautiful landscape. The protection of our environment is vitally important to us and we know this event has impacted this sensitive area and everyone who enjoys this part of our community.
As a Council we want to ensure that the residents of Abbotsford know that the City takes this incident very seriously. An Emergency Operations Centre has been set-up to coordinate a response alongside local First Nations, government partners and Quantum Murray Environment, a leading Canadian environmental and industrial services company. A treatment plan was developed and a water treatment system has been established onsite at Bateman Park to remove contaminates from the creek water. Special fencing has been set-up to restrict access to the area from fish and other waterborne species.
Fraser Health has advised that it is safe to be in the park, however residents visiting the park are asked to follow the instructions and stay on designated paths and out of the water. Signage is up throughout the park and Park Ambassadors are walking the site to help guide park users while this work is underway. We are also asking that people please ensure any pets are kept on leash and are restricted from drinking the creek water.
The City of Abbotsford continues to monitor and support the spill response through our Emergency Operations Centre located close to the site. You can read the latest information at www.abbotsford.ca/alerts/spill-stoney-creek.
We want to thank all Abbotsford residents for their understanding during this time, we appreciate all of the support.
