The Abbotsford International Airshow is back and we’re excited to once again be welcoming visitors from across the Fraser Valley and beyond to celebrate aviation at Abbotsford International Airport (YXX).
The event comes right on the heels of the Aerospace, Defence and Security Expo, another event that brings national and global aerospace companies to the airport’s Fraser Valley Trade and Exhibition Centre (TRADEX) and features exhibits, workshops and high-profile speakers.
The Airshow has grown a lot over the past 62 years, and it’s now the largest aviation festival in Canada. This year the Airshow is also marking the Royal Canadian Air Force’s centenary with demonstrations by the fan-favourite Canadian Forces Snowbirds, as well as special RCAF Heritage Flights showing off aircraft through the ages. For more on what you can expect, check out the Airshow website.
No doubt we’re in for a weekend full of fun and spectacle, but here in Abbotsford, aviation is about more than that.
We are part of the largest aerospace hub on the continent with Washington State, our community boasts one of the fastest-growing passenger volume airports in Canada since 2015, and we are home to a world-class fixed/rotary-winged aerospace cluster. And like Abbotsford itself, the airport’s proximity to the US boarder, Highway 1 and the Lower Mainland adds to YXX’s appeal to businesses and travellers.
Speaking of travellers, we’re also coming off a record-breaking year that saw air passenger volume of nearly 1.275 million passengers, which tops our previous record by more than 250,000 passengers. It’s exciting to see more people flying in and out of Abbotsford than ever before. This may be due to YXX’s leading position as the only ultra-low-cost airport in Canada, with the aim of making air travel more affordable and accessible for all Canadians.
The Airshow is a great opportunity not only to marvel at aerial performances and aircraft displays, but to reflect on the importance of our aviation sector to our economy and community. As a Council our goal is to continue to develop a vibrant and diverse economy, and that means continuing to enhance Abbotsford International Airport.
