In Canada we are extremely fortunate to live in a democratic society. With a federal election just 11 days away, it’s important to for us to reflect on the privilege we have to choose our government representatives and have a say in how our country is governed.
This is not a right to be taken for granted. Not all countries get to enjoy free and fair elections like we do. And even if we don’t like the final results, we must be thankful that we have the opportunity to weigh in.
Whether this is your first election, or if you’re a veteran voter, we encourage you to participate in the democratic process. As the campaign continues, the candidates will be outlining their visions for Canada and their positions on the issues that matter to you.
As a City Council there are many decisions we make that affect our residents. However, areas like the military, immigration and foreign affairs are handled by the federal government. This is a great time to brush up on the responsibilities of the different levels of government, so you can make an informed decision at the ballot box.
It’s also worth noting that for this election, many federal ridings have new names and boundaries due to a 2023 redistribution of federal electoral districts. The riding of Abbotsford has become Abbotsford–South Langley, and Mission–Matsqui–Fraser Canyon is now Mission–Matsqui–Abbotsford.

Happy voting!
